In 1975 in Venezuela, the music professor and economist José Antonio Abreu began an “utopian” crusade. He wanted to save children from poverty and criminality by teaching them music for free and making them members of a Symphony Orchestra. Only 11 children came to the first rehearsal, but the seed gave birth to what would later become globally known as EL SISTEMA (The System). An educational system, a weapon against poverty, a tool for social change, and an attempt to change the world through music!
